National Disability Insurance Scheme

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has now rolled out in our area. The NDIS means exciting opportunities for people with disabilities as we move towards a new system that provides greater choice and control for service users.

The NDIS is an insurance scheme that funds the support people with disability, to do the things they want to do every day. The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports related to an individual’s functional impairment because of disability. Reasonable means ‘fair’ and necessary means ‘needed’. Support must result in outcomes for the person and will not usually replace other support that is working, such as that provided by family.
The NDIS does not cover all supports. Existing community services, such as the health and education systems, will continue to operate as usual. The NDIS does not fund daily living expenses, such as rent or board, food or utilities bills.

To be eligible for the NDIS in Victoria:

  • you must live where the NDIS is available
  • you must have a permanent disability, even if the amount of support you need changes
  • you need some support to do the things you want to do
  • you must be an Australian citizen or the law says you can stay in Australia as a citizen
  • you must be under 65 years old.
